2022 TAMUS LSAMP Symposium
The TAMUS LSAMP 2022 Symposium was hosted by Texas A&M University (TAMU) at the Kyle Field Hall of Champions and Memorial Student Center. Faculty and students from Texas A&M University (TAMU), Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, and Texas A&M University at Galveston arrived to Kyle Field on Thursday, March 3rd for check-in, poster setup, and lunch pickup. As lunch was served, Dr. Karen Butler-Purry and Morgan Schweller welcomed all attendees to the symposium.
Following lunch, participants had the opportunity to attend a networking session where students and faculty could mingle and introduce themselves to one another. The first session held was “So, You’re Thinking About Grad School”. During this session, Dr. Shannon Walton talked about the benefits of graduate school. After the first session, students had the opportunity to choose their next activity from the following list: visit poster sessions, graduate school fair, tours, professional development sessions, or college and departmental events. To close out the first day of events, dinner was served with the keynote speaker Dr. Andrew Roberts.
The second day of events, Friday, March 4th, kicked off with an LSAMP breakfast and a graduate student plan discussion about applying to and surviving in graduate school. Throughout this panel, current graduate students were able to give beneficial advice to undergraduate students who are considering grad school in the future. Following the panel, symposium participants were able to explore another activity of their choice from the list above. The next session included the presentation “Dollars & Sense: Grad School Funding Opportunities” with speaker Dr. Sheila Green. This presentation introduced students to different ways that they can possibly obtain the funds needed for graduate school. The symposium winded does with an evaluation with Dr. Michael Preuss and ended with the awards banquet and ceremony.
