About the Program:
The “Summer Research Experience Program in Cancer Science” is a 10-week summer research internship hosted on the campus of Roswell Park Cancer Institute- one of the world’s first cancer centers located in Buffalo, New York. Applicants to the program are undergraduate students in their junior year (or academic equivalent) who have a keen interest in biomedical research with a particular emphasis on cancer. Through the application process, they are able to choose cancer-related project offerings from an internship directory and compete for funded positions. These projects span a variety of cancer science disciplines which match applicant’s interests in biology, biochemistry, biostatistics, molecular/cellular biology, epidemiology, genetics, physics and chemistry. Students chosen for the program conduct an independent basic, clinical or translational research project in a team learning environment where they receive collaborative mentorship and guidance from the host faculty member and their laboratory staff of graduate students and science professionals. Supporting co-curricular, professional development and social activities complement the core research experience providing for a well-rounded and immersive internship. As a cap-stone achievement to their experience, interns present both a scientific poster and talk on their research project at a program-sponsored research conference and “Biomedical Research Day” for internship programs across the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
On the whole, the “Summer Research Experience Program in Cancer Science” allows interns to immerse themselves in the life-style of a cancer researcher and make an experience-based decision about graduate school and careers in science. It also allows them to “audition” for graduate school in the cancer sciences at RPCI, since many of our researchers who mentor in the program are also faculty members of the Roswell Park Graduate Division- an academic unit of the University at Buffalo.
