The award-winning Garden State LSAMP (Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation) will host a National Science Foundation (NSF) Bridge to the Doctorate program at Rutgers University-Newark. The program will support a cohort of twelve (12) graduate students from LSAMP programs around the U.S. who are pursuing doctoral studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs beginning in Fall 2020. This is a unique program that tailors the graduate experience to best suit the goals of the student.

Education: Rutgers University delivers world-class graduate education to thousands of student. Many of our programs at Rutgers-Newark are collaborative with Rutgers-New Brunswick and New Jersey Institute of Technology for expanded opportunities in courses and research.

Location: Situated in the dynamic City of Newark, Rutgers-Newark is an anchor institution committed to sustainable economic development throughout the City. The university is a 22-minute train ride from midtown Manhattan (NYC), in a major US transportation hub, and within an hour drive from Columbia University, Princeton University, Stony Brook University, NYU, CUNY, and Brookhaven National Labs, among others.

Training: Fellows receive mentoring, professional development, research opportunities, and support from faculty mentors and LSAMP staff to ensure successful completion of the program.

Bridge to Doctorate Fellowship Offerings:

  1. Annual stipend of $32,000 plus tuition for the first 2 years.
  2. Continued stipend and tuition support for years 3-through-5 from the academic department
  3. Community of support among local, regional and national B2D Fellows
  4. Research assistance from the Garden State LSAMP
  5. Participation in annual Garden State LSAMP Alliance Conference and Graduate Showcase

  • Must be: admitted to a Rutgers University, Newark Ph.D. program for Fall 2020

  • a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

  • Evidence of participation in an LSAMP program from the Director/Coordinator at an undergraduate institution
